What MOQ Means When Sourcing Products in China

MOQ means minimum order quantity: the smallest order a supplier is willing to accept for a specific product, material and production method. It is not a universal number, and it should not be treated as a fixed promise before a supplier reviews the brief.

Why MOQs vary
A supplier’s MOQ can change with material sourcing, color, finish, packaging, printing, tooling, labour setup and existing production schedules. A simple stock item may have a lower MOQ than a custom product that needs new molds, special plating or branded packaging.

What to include in an MOQ request
Give suppliers one clear brief: product category, dimensions, materials, finish, color options, logo treatment, packaging, target quantity, target market and delivery requirements. Ask them to state the MOQ, sample cost, tooling cost, unit price tiers and the assumptions behind each quotation.

How to compare supplier replies
Compare MOQs only when the specifications match. A low MOQ may exclude custom packaging, offer a different material, use a different finish or require a higher unit price. Put each reply into the same comparison sheet before deciding.

Ways to reduce an MOQ responsibly
You can ask whether stock materials, standard colors, a single size, simplified packaging or a phased launch changes the MOQ. These choices can reduce complexity, but they may affect the product or brand experience. Confirm every revised term in writing.

Do not confuse MOQ with a guarantee
A supplier may provide an indicative MOQ early in a discussion. The final MOQ should be confirmed after the specification, materials, process and commercial terms are agreed. Production timing, capacity and certification requirements also need their own written confirmation.
